It`s certainly not a cheap investment and while you can get horses for cheaper, usually through adoption than buying, horses typically cost upwards of a few thousand dollars, usually in the tens of thousands for very good ones. However, like anything in the world, there are some horses that have gone for incredibly high prices. Read on to find out what the most expensive horses that were bought and sold are in the world. Jalil -- $9.7 million Jalil is a racehorse who was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 2004. Famous racehorse Storm Cat sired him. He went for the incredible price of $9.7 million and was bought by emir of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammad, and he was then trained in Europe and started his racing career in 2006. He won many races until 2008 and now is in China supporting the thoroughbred industry.

Snaffi Dancer -- $10.2 million Snaffi Dancer was the first ever horse sold for more than $10 million and it`s not hard to see why, since that is an incredible amount of money. This sale was in 1983, so you can only imagine what the $10 million meant in those days.

Although this horse was bought for such an incredible sum he turned out to be not very good at racing and was retired to a farm in Florida shortly after his racing career began. Annihilator -- $19 million Can you imagine spending this much on a horse, even one as amazing as Annihilator? Annihilator was renound for being absolutely stunning with a beautiful dark color. He went for quite so much money because he comes from a very elite horse line, Niatross, a line that won Meadowlands Pace and Little Brown Jug.

This beautiful horse, nicknamed Toto, is a Dutch Warmblood who was a stunning black dressage horse. This horse held the world record for dressage for quite some time, so it`s no wonder he sold for a pretty penny. He`s won three gold medals as well, that`s one impressive stallion.

Shareef Dancer -- $40 million

We are getting into some insanely high numbers now. Shareef Dancer was bred in America and was sold in 1983. He won the Group 1 Irish Derby Stakes of Curragh and the Group II King Edward VII Stakes and it was after these incredible performances he sold for this incredible amount.

Fusaichi Pegasus -- $70 million Fusaichi Pegasus is the most expensive horse bought or sold of all time. He is considered by some to be one of the best racehorses in history, having won nearly $2 million. He was born in 1997 and won the Kentucky Derby and came in second at the Preakness Stakes. He won other races as well such as the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes and the Jerome Handicap. In 2000 he was sold to a breeder in Ireland for this insane sum.
